Aims
The Mathematics Department comprises a dedicated and caring team of teachers who actively promote the enjoyment of Mathematics. Each teacher aims to provide opportunities for all pupils to:
- develop a feel and a love of mathematics
- develop oral, practical and written skills
- develop an appreciation of mathematics as a concise and powerful means of communication
- develop an understanding of mathematical principles
- develop an appreciation of the patterns and relationships within and between topics in mathematics
- have a confidence and interest, which will enable the student to ask questions such as what would happen if?
- have a feel for numbers and the relationships between them; and for measurement and estimation of quantities
- have an ability to reason logically, to generalise and to prove
- solve problems and to interpret and check the results obtained
- develop their awareness of personal finance
- apply mathematical knowledge to situations arising outside of the mathematics classroom
- develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and achieve their full potential in mathematics
Key Stage 3
Students follow the Northern Ireland Curriculum for Mathematics and Financial Capability. Each student also produces 3 pieces of work associated with Using Mathematics in Year 10.
Key Stage 4 (GCSE)
All students will study GCSE Maths over two years with some students also choosing to study Further Maths as well over the two years. All girls studying GCSE Maths and GCSE Further Maths follow the CCEA specification.
Key Stage 5 (GCE)
There are three modules at AS level, two Pure Mathematics and one Applied. There are also three modules at A2 level, two Pure Mathematics and one Applied. Exceptional Mathematics students are given the opportunity to study Further Mathematics at AS/A2. We follow the CCEA specification for AS/A2 Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
Extra-curricular
We have a rich programme of extra-curricular activities on offer in the Mathematics Department. All our Year 9 students take part in the UKMT Junior Challenge, with senior girls also completing the Intermediate and Senior challenges.
We enjoy using ICT as much as possible to improve learning and enhance enjoyment of maths learning. There is also a weekly Maths Club for Junior students.
